Clean and off-grid lighting in Kilifi County through sustainable enterprises
The project will focus on clean and sustainable off grid lighting in Kilifi County through sustainable enterprise. It will involve the youth and Girl Guides in the region.
The main objective of the project is to increase access to clean affordable and sustainable lighting technologies for off grid households and small enterprises while developing sustainable businesses in Kilifi County of Coast province. The project will seek to achieve the following specific objectives:-
i) To increase access to portable solar technologies by off grid households and enterprises in Kilifi County through sustainable businesses as well as set up an after sale support network.
ii) To catalyze an enabling environment for clean lighting enterprises to develop and scale up through involvement of various stakeholders iii) To develop a financing mechanism for the solar technology distribution value chain (enterprises) as a way of promoting last mile distribution.
iv) To offer entrepreneurship skills to selected people to enable them establish sustainable businesses that can support energy ladder growth

Project Characteristics and Results
Gender Focus
A platform for women groups in the community to engage in income generating activities will be created. Women are the most affected by lack of clean and affordable energy sources and services. Most women in rural areas spend most of the time sourcing for biomass, it is important that the project involves women in enabling households to access clean lighting technologies and services. The project will involve women in the value chain by having girls promote the technology and become the agents of the paradigm shift to renewable energy use for household and small shops within Kilifi County. The project will also create create women enterprises as retail outlets as well use women groups as renewable energy end user distribution mechanisms. Since women in Kilifi are the most affected by lack of sustainable energy the project will focus on social guarantees for the women to access credit for renewable energy as well as use forums to educate them on the importance of clean and efficient lighting. A sustainable enterprise will be created and developed through establishment of distribution outlets, retail outlets and service centres. This will create a sustainable last mile distribution network.
