Erosion Control in Oron Town, Oron Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State
Erosion Control in Oron Town, Oron Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State
The proposed project is to reduce the vulnerability of Oron community, neighboring communities and the surrounding ecosystems from the impacts of coastal erosion. The project will offset the current and future negative social, health and environmental impacts of increased stress resulting from flooding. The project will build Oron community capacity to construct a minimum of 3 nos, 5m box culverts along the road to control the flow of the water in the communities. Initiate a mangrove (red and white mangrove species) and other trees such as purpleheart, iroko, jathropha, ogbono and angelique replanting to rehabilitate the wetland and stabilize soil around the community through training of community members to raise tree nurseries of 2000 mangrove species and 2000 other trees at a commercial level which can be sold to other communities after project close out. It will carry out series of capacity building and community advocacy to educate the Oron community members on the effect of climate change and mitigation strategy, as well as conduct demonstration projects of soil conservation practices on farms. The community will provide land for the project.
Project Output:
- 3000 trees (1500 trees: purpleheart, iroko, jathropha, ogbono and angelique, and 1500 red and white mangrove species) planted in 10,000 sq. m. of eroded and deforested area
- 2000 white and red mangrove seedlings, and 2000 other tree seedlings (purpleheart, iroko, jathropha, ogbono and angelique) raised in the nurseries
- 3 nos 5m box culverts constructed in erosion sites in Oron.
- 3 Awareness/sensitization rallies conducted
