Reducing the negative impacts of climate change by promoting clean and renewable energy in Iwerekhan and Amokpe communities of Delta State
"The project proposes to address the problem of deforestation, climate change and access to clean energy issues in Amokpe and Iwherekan communities in Delta state. They are fishing and farming cluster communities and each cluster has a population of about 8,000. Forests degradation is high in these communities and massive traditional charcoal production business is a livelihood source for the communities. Government attempt to address deforestation is low and not within a clean energy transition and alternatives. Project activities include providing training workshop for communities engagement and empowerment; finding better and efficient ways of charcoal production through modern charcoal kiln technology. Charcoal like fuel wood contributes to deforestation when unregulated. This project aims to reduce the amount of fuel wood consumption by using less wood to produce much charcoal and thus reverse the unregulated traditional open kiln method that is highly fuel wood wasteful. The rate of deforestation will also be reduced. Health wise, it reduces health impacts by less smoke and pollution.
The project activities include:
There will be an increased Local awareness and involvement of 300 community members directly and 2,000 indirectly in clean energy in 2014. The project local community will have access to 5 varieties and sources of alternative energy solutions in solar, fuel efficient cook stoves, and household lighting units.
