Insuring Spate Irrigation in Wadi Mawr delta (Najran dyke), Wadi Mawr
Insuring Spate Irrigation in Wadi Mawr delta (Najran dyke), Wadi Mawr
Wadi Mawr Delta is the flat land located at the end of the middle parts of the wadi reaching the mudflats/saltmarshes on the Sea coast in Luhayyah. The land area is completely fat with land area of 6000 ha. There are three main land groups in the vicinity which receive flood irrigation through each own irrigation dyke being; Al-Mokhawer, Allawi and Najran. The land located to the latter receives the flood after the above and before being discharged to the Sea.
Due to irrigation complexity in the Wadi, the three dykes receive flood water from upper to lower being Al-Mokhawer then Allawi and finally Najran. Due to the wider area of the Wadi intersected with flat elevation, building dykes on the side of catchment area is the only way to direct flood water towards the targeted land. To secure water flow Najran farmers have to build two arms 5 km long to uphold flood water when in the previous dykes. Further it’s proposed that a small tunnel is dug on the ground to ease and ensure water flow towards the center of the delta. With this treatment ca. 6000 ha of land can be irrigated.
The projects immediate impacts are as follow:
1. Provide direct benefit to 208 agriculture holdings, 2000 families and 10,000 inhabitants
2. Abandoning the use of 108 water pumps used for irrigation for at least one whole season per year.
3. Save the environment a total of 11,807 tons of CO2 per year
4. It saves agriculture community a total of US$ 2,183,129 as a result of saving fuel cost.
5. Above all project help recharge water table that preventing Sea water intrusion as a result of over pumping of water for irrigation during the year.
