Community-Based Approach to Climate Change Mitigation. LOCATION: Nsan, Akamkpa LGA/ Cross River State
The overall goal of the initiative is to work with the rural communities within the buffer zone (1 km radius from the national park) of Cross River State of Nigeria to improve their living conditions and reduce their vulnerability to climate change impacts by promoting participatory mitigation measures and economically sustainable alternative livelihood such as livestock rearing. The buffer zone has been impacted by severe tree felling for fuel wood need. The project aim to provide alternative and clean source of energy to address the over-exploitation of the forest for fuel wood (solar cooker); tree planting campaign to increase the forest cover that can serve as canopy and also a source of income for the rural poor (Bush mango- popularly known as Ogbono- also an economic tree) and also carry out sensitization campaign, training and capacity building.
