Sustainable managment of the Mombasa country peri-urgan mangrove forest, Kenya
Sustainable managment of the Mombasa country peri-urgan mangrove forest, Kenya
Mombasa has about 3,000 ha of Peri-urban mangrove forests found within Tudor and Mwache creek. However, in the past 20 years mangrove forest cover has declined drastically to the current estimated cover of about 1, 232 ha.
The mangrove forest faces considerable anthropogenic pressure including encroachment, clear cutting, pollution through oil spills and raw sewerage disposal.
Taking advantage of the recent policy and legislative changes that allow collaboration between the government of Kenya and forest communities to manage forests, concerned communities within and around the Mombasa Peri-urban mangrove forest formed the Mombasa Kilindini Community Forest Association (MOKICFA) in 2012.
With support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), Small Grant Program (SGP) implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), MOKICFA is currently engaging with the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) and other partners to provide for the sustainable use of the Mombasa County Mangrove forest while ensuring related biodiversity is protected.
The project has the overall objective ‘Provide for the sustainable use of the Mombasa County Mangrove forest while ensuring related biodiversity is protected to improve its integrity, function and productivity’ covers mangrove forests found within Tudor, Port Reitz and Mtwapa (Mombasa side) creeks. The specific objectives of the project are;
1. Sensitize and mobilize local communities, relevant government agencies and other stakeholders on the development of the Mombasa County Mangrove Forest Management Plan
2. Enhance understanding of the Mombasa County Mangrove Forest status
3. Support the development of the Mombasa county Participatory Mangrove Management Plan
4. Rehabilitate and restore degraded mangrove areas
