ENHANCING RESILIENCE OF THE SAQANI COMMUNITY TO THE ADVERSE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE THROUGH THE MAINSTREAMING OF FOOD SECURITY AND COASTAL INFRASTRUCTURE
The project’s primary focus is to build local capacity to improve land management and thus prevent land degradation which is currently prevalent in the area. While addressing the land degradation problems, some of the secondary problems arising from land degradation may be resolved and these include, poor drinking water quality, high sedimentation in the lagoon, water logged village during flood and storm surges, coastal erosion and loss of land productivity. The project will build capacity through training and project implementation in effective land management through sustainable agriculture. Areas that have been de-forested will be replanted with native fruit and nut trees and native plants to prevent soil erosion.
The project will also address climate change awareness by assisting the community to develop adaptation plans and to implement plans through an integrated crop and aquaculture production. The conservation efforts and awareness on food security will also link with marine conservation, land use activities, forest conservation and crop seed bank. The community nursery will encourage the use of local food for processing and for preservation. The project will encourage the community to develop long term partnership and to develop a long term development plan for the village and lessons learned will help develop a development plan for the district.
