Access to spate Irrigation in Khilaliah, Wadi Siham, Hodiedah Governorate
Access to spate Irrigation in Khilaliah, Wadi Siham, Hodiedah Governorate
Khilaliah community lives in Wadi Siham, Marawah District, Hodiedah Governorate. The location is on the Wadi Siham bank with agriculture is being the main subsistence activity. Spate irrigation is the main backbone of the agriculture in the area. This can be accessed through traditionally built dykes consist of earth materials that required high labour to build, high cost to maintain and does not secure successful irrigation from flood that comes from the mountains during summer and Autumn seasons. Due to such circumstances, agriculture is not providing local community with the full crops they plant hence crops yield is impacted. Few tube wells exist in the area but most farmers cannot access due to cost and crops’ sharing of limited land tenures.
The objectives of the project are:
- Building two flood speed reduction dykes and one flood conversion dyke.
- Enable community to secure spate irrigation during summer and autumn floods.
- Build up local community capacity in land resources management
- Control of plant invasive species grown in flood courses
- Build local community capacity in land management.
- Raise community awareness of environment.
The project is supported in partnership with Community, GEF-Small Grant Programme and the Tihama Development Authority of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation.
