Improve Access to spate Irrigation in Wadi Siham, Hodiedah Governorate
Improve Access to spate Irrigation in Wadi Siham, Hodiedah Governorate
The Government of Yemen with the use of bilateral fund initiated wadi Siham spate irrigation system during the early 80s. Several conversion dams were built to ease flood water distribution along the Wadi flow. This achieved through several canals that convey flood water in upper stream as long as possible. The flow of flood water was controlled through the size of canals inlets. Along each conveying canals several gates (outlets) were built with the expectation that will deliver through the required quantities of water that will sufficiently irrigate all the agriculture land that has water right. Some land areas were never received any flood water or at ad hoc basis that did not permit sustainable agriculture and welfare.
The objectives of the project are:
1. To allow deprived land of being irrigated from flood
2. To allow fare division of flood water between right owners ending their lengthy dispute.
3. To enhance farming community capacity in land and water resources management
4. To improve local communities awareness of their environment.
This project will achieve its aims through alleviating some farmers grievances and allow them to access flood water on both side of the canal that take water from “Waqer” conversion dam to “Al-Gabaliah” village and adjacent plains till it reach “ Al-Maraweh” city. Three new flood water gates will be opened which are “Oudat Omairah”, “Al-Afajiah” and “Al-Masabie”. In addition a division was will be constructed to allow fare distribution of flood the pass through Al-Jabaliah outlet between eastern and western land to end long disputed water right between farmers.
The project will help building capacity of farming communities regarding land and water management, best practices of water uses, control of invasive species and raising awareness of the importance of environment in the region.
