Conservation of Biodiversity and preservation of artifacts of cultural importance along the Dan Miska nature trail in the district of Les Mamelles
Conservation of Biodiversity and preservation of artifacts of cultural importance along the Dan Miska nature trail in the district of Les Mamelles
The Les Mamelles Heritage Association is a Community Based Organisation, CBO in the district of Les Mamelles on the main island of Mahe formed to respond to the need to bring together the people of Les Mamelles to contribute towards eliminating the negative image that the general population tends to associate the district with. More than 40 members have responded to the call to form the LMHA initiated in 2010 and registered in March 2011. The project aims to re-establish two abandoned sites in the community namely the ‘Larivyer manmel’ and the ‘Dan Miska’ trail through a pool of activities to rehabilitate the sites and build the capacity of the community members to participate in the project activities and beyond. This will lead them to take positive action and provide alternative forms of livelihood to occupy the time of the vulnerable youngsters, at the same time generate some income for the community. This project is also building on the GEF SGP strategy in linking its activities to important national strategies and other policies and legal framework such as the EMPS, the Strategy 2017: Creating our Nation’s wealth together, the Seychelles National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan 1998 (NBSAP), the Seychelles National Wetlands Conservation and Management Policy 2006, Vision 21 (addressing tourism)...etc. It is also addressing one of the main thematic area of the GEF SGP; Biodiversity, helping the reduce the threats facing our local biodiversity, at the same time contributing to mitigate the threatening impact of climate change in the country.
