Solar energy is a common benefit for environment and livelihood
Solar energy is a common benefit for environment and livelihood
This project aims to create a model for the sustainable use of renewable energy sources (RES) via demonstration and popularization of fruits, herbs and forest products multifunctional solar dryers (SD) in rural areas of Zhytomyr region. The project has two equally important components. The environmental component includes the demonstration of RES use as an alternative practice that contributes to the reduction of CO emissions through application of best European practices. This innovative practice will accelerate the use of energy saving techniques to mitigate climate change. The second component is socio-economic. The popularization and use of multifunctional SDs in rural areas of Zhytomyr region will enable to practice RES sources on household level, thus delivering economic and environmental benefits. Finally, this project will contribute to the empowerment of local women and youth. Due to its economic viability, this project has strong replication potential.

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
Interest shown from local population towards use solar dryers (SD) is justified also by providing in-kind contribution to the project from local households. That is why, it is set as a criteria for selecting the project beneficiary households. The community members will be actively involved throughout the different stages of the project implementation and participatory monitoring.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Limited awareness on contemporary energy saving mechanisms on household and industrial level inherited from Soviet past can be addressed by learning and demonstration that are parts of this project. This initiative has enough driving mechanisms to ensure dissemination and sustainability, and in wider aspect it has enough mechanisms to grow into sound commercial projects. Since this project is composed of two equally important parts – learning and experiencing, therefore raising public awareness and responsiveness on the issue is a major part of it. This will be achieved by the film developed and broadcast by local TV, training and dissemination materials developed, web site and resource center established. Continuous project long advice and consulting exercised is another asset in this respect that will enable to increase awareness and responsiveness of local society on the issue.
