Sustainable Agriculture - Fifa Protected Area

Ghor Fifa Local Development Society has established partnership with the newly established Protected Area management “Fifa Reserve” to integrate sustainable development and nature conservation efforts together and involve members of the local community with the decision making process in order to be part of the strategic planning of the Protected Area and to improve natural resource management in the southern Jordan Valley region.

The Project aims to adopt an integrated natural resources management approach to achieve sustainable development and preserve the unique biodiversity rich ecosystem of Ghor Fifa. The Project deal with the multiple problems of land degradation and agrochemicals due intensive agricultural practices by providing a model based on natural "organic" sustainable agriculture techniques, the Project also contribute to nature conservation efforts initiated by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature.

Project Characteristics and Results

Project sustainability

-institutionally: the Faifeh PA establishment and management by RSCN, the partnership be Tween RSCN and the local CBO -technically: building the capacity of the RSCN local team, and the CBO team -financially: the project is an income generating activity based on seasonal agricultural production and fish farming

Capacity - Building Component

Implement a program for the NGO to build their technical capabilities in the areas of sustainable agriculture beside their institutional capabilities to reduce its dependence on external support and develop their ability to implement projects on their own .

Notable Community Participation

The local community is considered to be the primary beneficiary of the project and have a key role in the implementation of different activities. Local community have an in-kind contribution to the project and is a part of the project committee as well which is responsible of project implementation and ensure local community involvement in all activities. On the other hand, local community are part of the awareness and capacity building programs. finally, alliances will be carried between different communities with the JSOF and RSCN cooperation.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The main target are farmers in the Jordan Valley (locally referred to as Ghor), the indigenous people of the Jordan Valley are the “Ghwarneh”. Ghwarneh were known for their traditional farming techniques which relied on natural ways, however, due to the spread of intensive farming in the Ghor with increased use of agrochemicals, much of the Ghwarneh traditional ways are lost. The project has established field farming “schools” where a group of farmers are trained to use a simplified form of organic farming based on indigenous Ghwarneh farming methods to produce organic based fertilizers and pesticides. Hence natural products are used instead of chemicals, knowledge is shared by rotating the location of field farming schools.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project improves the level of household income for local community members through the construction of a agricultural marketing program in collaboration with the Jordanian Society for Agriculture Farming and create new jobs opportunities.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The project addresses the importance of the sustainable agricultural development concept in the region by the abandoning chemical contaminants use that affect the the air, water and soil & also affect all aspects of life, especially human beings.

Gender Focus

Women will have a primary role in this project as the social nature of the area in which women participates in all living standards stages at the levels of house, farm & institutions, also are included in a outreach program and program documentation and indicators matrix.

Replication of project activities

the project is meant to be a pilot initiative introducing the integrated ecosystem management principles into the wider agricultural areas of the southern Ghor region.
