Botanical Gardens and Herbal Plants Conservation Project in Ipetu-Ijesa, Oriade Local Government, Osun State.
The project (Botanical Gardens and Herbal Plants Conservation Project in Ipetu-Ijesa, Oriade Local Government, Osun State) seeks to to preserve the herbal potentials of medicinal plants that are unique to the ecosystem. Almost all the plantations that could be labeled as Botanical gardens in Nigeria suffer from neglect arising from the fact that their development was driven either by individual enterprise or commercial purposed. The sustainability of the past Botanical garden projects are therefore being hampered by inadequate funding. This project will try to correct this anomaly by developing Botanical gardens that are people driven and community centered.
The primary goal and objective is to develop a garden of herbal plants to preserve 250 endangered and rare medicinal species towards preserving the ecosystem for sustainable development. The project activities include consultation with the local leadership (traditional leaders, youth, farmers, community, women and local government council); State Ministry of Environment and Tourism, Legislative Representatives; Inventory of indigenous species; Training in Forest Resource Management and enhanced income generation activities; Rural Project Management Training, climate Change Awareness Campaign, Publications (IECs) and a Website.
