Sustainable use of Soil and Water resources through Improved Vegetable Technologies in Obudu, Cross River State
The project (Sustainable use of Soil and Water resources through Improved Vegetable Technologies in Obudu, Cross River State) seeks to address the issue of land degradation. Obudu community is under threat from human induced land degradation. More than 90% of Obudu farmers are small scale operators cultivating plots less than one hectare and lives in absolute poverty on less than $1 per day. They are largely constrained due to the absence of modern techniques such as crop programming, which helps schedule production throughout the year, access to good planting material - improved hybrid, drought and disease-resistant seeds and loss of soil nutrients – land degradation. The overall goal of the project is to combat land degradation in Obudu, Cross River State in order to protect and restore ecosystems and essential ecosystem services that are key to reducing poverty.

The main activities of the project will include: Selection and Training of 120 farmers (women and youth) in organic vegetable production, establishment and maintenance of Participatory Demonstration Farm with Irrigation System, obtain and disseminate improved Seeds from AVRDC The World Vegetable Center, disseminate Vegetable seeds to trained Farmers, assist 120 Farmers to replicate the Demonstration Farm on 1 Hectare Farm Land each, monitor each participant’s farm, establish Farmer-to-farmer training extension services, collaboration and Association. The NGO is in collaboration with AVRDC–The World Vegetable Center, which is the leading international center for vegetable research and development worldwide and New Forest Project, a USA-based NGO has supplied us with Seeds of Trees that fix Nitrogen in the Soil to compliment our efforts in Conservation Agriculture with Trees. RISE-UP targets women and youths.
