Land and Water Resources conservation in Dyr Abker, Luhayyah District, Hodiedah Governorate
The Tihama plain extend a long the Red Sea from Bab Al-Mandeb till Saudi border. It varied in width reaching max 50 Km.. The plain mostly constitutes of sand and agricultural land most fertile along Wadis discharged rain floods from mountains to the Red Sea. The agriculture in the plains and coastal areas receive low annual rainfall of about 50 mm but depend on tube wells and floods (spate) Irrigation from the mountains that run through several Wadies around which agricultural land is found.
The project aimed at assisting local farmers in Dyr Abker villages, Wadi Mour basin to install Thirty-three sub-surface irrigation conveyance network that serves 251 agriculture holdings with total land area of 875 ha., benefiting 251 families (1840 inhabitants). The system is considered addressing issues related to water and soil conservation. The irrigation depends of flood water during rainy season in the highlands that reaches the basin on ad hoc basis, where tube-well irrigation is dominant. The sandy and sandy loam soil made it very difficult to irrigate using the traditional methods of flood irrigation (via canals) where 29% of water is drained into the ground during its path in the canals between the well and the targeted fields. The conveyance systems prevent soil salinity, save 29% water and fuel and safe up to 50% of farm labour when compared with the traditional way (flood irrigation through open sandy canals). The project will assist local farmers in gaining knowledge in organic agriculture and land and water resources management through on farm training activities addressing several issues relevant to irrigated organic agriculture and environment.
