Demonstration of possibility to avoid climate change estimating potential of greenhouse gas emissions released by solid domestic waste by example of Lugansk city
Demonstration of possibility to avoid climate change estimating potential of greenhouse gas emissions released by solid domestic waste by example of Lugansk city
The problem of Lugansk is the huge open landfill, which damage the environment as well as influences the environmental security in the city. Local community is not aware of the influence of solid domestic waste on climate change. In addition there is no reliable data related to volume of greenhouse gas emissions released by solid domestic waste in Lugansk region. The NGO “Consumers committee” initiated the project that will reduce the consumption and is supposed to impact resolving the issues of climate change in industrial regions of Ukraine.
Therefore project aim is to solve several questions: to determine volume of greenhouse gas emissions released by solid domestic waste and their energy value, to create potential for continuation of present activity through introducing efficient consumption, raising community’s awareness and their involvement.
Examination of solid domestic waste structure and weight will make possible forecasting of influence of greenhouse gas emissions generated by solid domestic waste on climate change and allow effective confrontation to this change. Increase of level of community’s knowledge related to influence of greenhouse gas released as a result of waste decomposition on climate change may cause activation of fight to stop this phenomenon that will result greenhouse gas emissions reduction. Moreover increase of community’s awareness on the fact that landfill gas is the valuable source of energy will lead to increase of its consumption level and decrease of traditional energy resources consumption. It will contribute to greenhouse gas emissions reduction.
Project will be running in the following directions:
- practical environmental activity;
- creation of favorable conditions for development of the region;
- introduce possibility for investment component;
- research;
- increase of awareness;
- spreading of information.
It will help to decrease anthropogenic influence on environment in general and have a positive impact on climate change problem in particular.
Project implementation will increase community’s awareness on influence of greenhouse gas released as a result of waste decomposition on climate change and the fact that landfill gas is the valuable source of energy.
Moreover project implementation will result such economic effect as minimization of expenditure needed for traditional energy resources consumption. It is presumed that the poverty level in Lugansk will be partly decreased and favorable conditions for business development will be created in the framework of the project implementation.
Project activity were approved during meeting of public organizations. More than 2000 local residents, representatives of authorities will be involved in the project. More than 500 persons will have practical trainings.
