Improving Food Production and Eco system Protection for Small-Scale Farmers through Increased Awareness and Community Based Adaptation Strategies to Climate change, Ibeju-lekki, Epe and Ifako-Ijaiye Local Governments of Lagos State
This project is aimed on addressing the impact of climate change on the food production capacity and livelihoods of small scale farmers in Epe and Ifako-Ijaye communities in Lagos state through sensitization, awareness, capacity buildings and alternative skills training for farmers. Its objectives includes; Assist farmers to understand climate change better, Reducing risks associated with lack/inadequat climate info, Stabilizing temperature for improved hatchability, Improved water quality management to enhance growth and Increased Poultry meat and egg production.
The target farmer communities are rural and semi-urban small holder farmers whose livelihoods which are based on planting, poultry and aquaculture are vulnerable to adverse impacts of climate change. Increasing temperatures have adversely impacted on the activities of these small scale farmers through increased crops failure, loss in fish and livestock, increasing water scarcity and destruction of productive assets, disruption and destruction of biodiversity, loss of land, shelter, properties, cultural heritage etc. The specific activities to be carried out are; to produce a climate change booklet called ‘climate change tips’ specifically for farmers which will be distributed among farmers in each community, conduct tailor-made seminars on the impact of agricultural activities on the emission of greenhouse gases and the dangers that unabated global warming poses to the livelihoods of farmers in each community, to improve the farm site operations of the farmers , address the issue of air pollution, greenhouse gas emission and also to improve their productivity by training them on farm site management and temperature management to increased production. The farmers especially fish farmers are involved in carrying out the project activities.
