SAVE AQUATIC LIVES IN LOWER NIGER RIVER in Onitsha, Anambra State, Nigeria
SAVE AQUATIC LIVES IN LOWER NIGER RIVER in Onitsha, Anambra State, Nigeria
The project seeks to stop the dumping of toxic industrial wastes, use of organic pollutants in the lower River Niger steams and ponds from Onitsha and to restore and improve the fresh water resources and ecosystem for sustainable development.
The dumping of harmful industrial & organic pollutants into the river by industrialists, especially textile and chemical industries in Onitsha urban has led to near depletion of the aquatic lives in the river and destruction of the entire ecosystem thereby endangering the whole environment for sustainability. The continuous dumping of toxic waste in the lower Niger has already threatened the livelihood of the communities, if this project is not implemented, the lives of the 15 communities will be in serious danger of extinction because the outbreak of water born diseases will increase, most of the communities who are fishermen will be out of business which will increase poverty, crimes and rural urban migration.
This will be achieved through advocacy for policy implementation, trainings and community mobilization, laboratory testing of the nature of the toxic wastes being dumped in the river and formation of vanguard against such harmful acts among other activities, this activities involves the fishermen and women of the community.
