Rain-water harvest for rangeland improvement in Damqoot (Mahshakat), Hawf
The area of “Mahshakat” is located north-east of Damqoot town, Hawf district, Al-Mahra governorate. It is in the border of Hawf protected area, consists of undulating hill slopes with narrow wadis. Due to its interior location does not receive full monsoon rains likewise hills facing the Sea. As a result of this vegetation is very sparse and dwarf. The Wadis contain tall trees and better vegetated than the hills.
Land users of the area are mainly herders from Damqoot and neighboring villages. The most problem local herders facing is the water for their herds while grazing in such remote areas. The number of households beneficiaries of the project are 62 families with total population of 500 inhabitants. The project will provide water to grazing Goats and Camels a total 6110 and 603 heads respectively.
Local communities proposed to build a dam cross the wadi with potential water holding capacity of 10,000 cubic meters. The projects include activities towards rehabilitating wadi beds to prevent soil erosion and permit vegetation development. Communities are proposing to carry a tree planting campaign to plant 1000 trees that are indigenous and of grazing potential. Communities are proposing an annual coast sharing for project management and its sustainability. Awareness activities aimed at encouraging participation of community members in natural resources management and development.
