Environmental Conservation and Sustainable Utilisation of Natural Resources in Jackalas No 1 Village

The Mazibakufa Development Trust is requesting funds for the implementation of the Environmental Conservation and Sustainable Utilization of Natural Resources in Jackalas 1 Village project.

The proposed project will directly address the aesthetic environment and socialization for the village, which has its own environmental management issues. The area is denuded due to multiple casual factors of vegetation depletion, overgrazing and a slope favourable to surface water run-off. The result is low crop productivity and damage to household livelihood; the womenfolk feeling the pinch even more severely.

The Environmental Conservation and Sustainable Utilization of Natural Resources in Jackalas 1 Village project aims to address some of these issues. It is intended to last 24 months and by the time of its conclusion, the community will be sufficiently capacitated to carry on with the sustainable development activities that the project includes.

Gender Focus

1. both men and women will be given the opportunity of equal participation in the activities of the project 2. there will be public education on gender equality

Capacity - Building Component

1. conservation education programme will provide valuable information and education for the people 2. the community will have the infrastructural capacity to operate a tourism outfit at the strategic border location 3. members of the community will be trained for the three income generating activities aforementioned and their establishment will also capacitate the community

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

1. eco-tourism is an integral part of the project. It is non-consumptive and will generate income 2. the selected income generating activities are bee-keeping and guinea fowl domestication and fish farming

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

1. planned tourist information centre will showcase information from many parts of the world 2. the conservation education programme will provide information and education on global issues such as climate change, globalization and sustainable development

Replication of project activities

Replication will happen as there is need to continue monitor gabions and rehabilitate new ones.

Project sustainability

The activities, especially those that are tourism related will continue to attract tourists thus generating income to MDT.

The village leadership now realizes that conservation is important, and so will support policy on conservation.

Yes, hopefully in 5 yrs to come. The Trust has other projects envisioned for the future.

Notable Community Participation

• Conservation education programme will involve extensive mobilization and information dissemination to encourage people to come on board, including all Wards and schools • This programme will also set up 7 Ward Conservation Committees which will ensure the involvement and participation of the entire village, if not directly, at least through representation by the Committee • The cultural village will be designed, constructed and run by members of the community • The community will directly participate in income generating projects

• the government is encouraging the involvement of local communities in the promotion and management of tourism initiatives

Project Results

Activities Performed Under this Agreement:

Conducted conservation awareness workshop for the Jackalas 1 community; constructed 3 gabions; built guinea fowl house and purchased ten guinea fowls; built cultural village office and planted trees at Kgotla, clinic and primary school.

Results:

The activities were fully accomplished on time. Rehabilitation of the gullies has been done and they do not pose danger to the community anymore.

Primary school are learning about the guinea fowls and their care.

The office block will facilitate a smooth running of the whole project. The office will also create employment. Through the office, the Trust will be able to lure tourists to its activities.

In the long term the village will have a lively tourism venture. Presence of gabions will reduce soil erosion. The planted trees will beautify the village and also act as wind breakers and provide shade.
