Pottery craft improvement project, Rahn, Hawf, Al-Mahrah Governorate;
Rahn Village is one of three main settlements in Hawf protected Area, Al-Mahara Governorate. Pottery industry helps old generation in that part of Yemen to use pottery in their livelihood. Few years ago, the Hawf forest was declared as protected area, hence become target for ecotourism and travel transit between Yemen and Oman. Young generation is keen to revive such skill for income generation and conservation of their traditions. A group of women received some basic training limited (two types) of pottery making but yet realized that there is a need to capture all types that were made in the area for use and sale of precious handcraft.
The project will focus on equipping women with pottery furnace for efficient burning of pottery with less fuel wood. This in turn will reduce the burden on women collecting the fire wood and reduce carbon production on one hand and improve pottery quality on the other hand. Thirty women at least will receive a substantial training to do all “once upon a time available pottery household tools” once again in current time.
