Reduction of Persistent Organic Pollutants from Northern Mt. Kenya Region
Reduction of Persistent Organic Pollutants from Northern Mt. Kenya Region
In partnership with several large horticultural producers, the project will survey water and soil in the Northern region of Mt. Kenya to determine the prevalence of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) as a result of the use of pesticides. The project will then conduct an education campaign among outgrowers of the large horticultural farms to reduce and eventually phase out the use of illegal pesticides containing POPs in the region. COLEACP through the Pesticide Initiative program have also partnered with this project to enahance training and demonstrative learning for the participating institutions.

Project Characteristics and Results
Policy Impact
Although the production and use of POPs-containing chemicals is banned in Kenya, there is still widespread use of these chemicals, especially in pesticides. It is envisioned that this project will help farmers better understand the health and environmental consequences of POPs-containing pesticides and provide alternative methods of pest-control, thus helping to strengthen the policy in a practical manner.
Replication of project activities
If the project is successful, it will be expanded to other agricultural areas around Mt. Kenya to help reduce the use of POPs throughout the region.
