Community Based Tourism in Manyana Village
Community Based Tourism in Manyana Village
Manyana village has good potential for eco-tourism. Besides its hilly landscape the village has geographical and cultural features and sites of historical importance. The potential offered by these features to eco-tourism has, however, never been exploited. Important historical features such as the ‘Lenao la ga Matsieng’ if left undeveloped could end up being destroyed or even displaced by other developments that the public may be more aware about.

The GEF/SGP country strategy provides the community of Manyana with an opportunity to develop community based tourism facilities and services, hence this proposal. MACODET would like to carry out a feasibility study in order to guide further developments relating to the cultural, traditional and environmental sites and practices into tourist attractions.

The goal is to diversify the economy of Manyana community through sustainable community-based tourism. This will achieved through focused, well planned eco-tourism development that involves the community effectively. This development will result in new job opportunities and professional skills acquisition.

Capacity - Building Component
In order to ensure that capacity exists within the community to facilitate similar projects in the future a volunteer Project Assistant will be secured from within Manyana community. This will help them to develop skills necessary to plan and carry out community level projects with minimum external input. An analysis of managerial aspects of feasibility will lead to a clear understanding of community capacity needs in order to sustain eco-tourism in the village, though protection and preservation of the environment on which it will be based.
