the Sant’Ana do Caatinga quilombola maroon community has approximately 250 inhabitants. Its economy is based on family farming and a small flow of tourists in search of fishing spots on the Paracatu river. The municipality of João Pinheiro has large-scale agriculture as the base of its economy, which excludes small farmers.
This project will build a Baru storage and processing facility also used for other Cerrado fruits in the Sant’Ana do Caatinga quilombola maroon community, expanding production and meeting sanitary regulation requirements

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
neighboring farmers will receive capacity building to become more aware of the global environment and local actions which can affect it. They will then be asked permission to grant access to wild collectors in search of baru within their lands. Furthermore, purchase of baru from registered farmers and collectors is planned, which will demonstrate to the entire regional population that it is possible to generate income from conservation of the Cerrado
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
project activities will contribute to sustainable use of a native Cerrado species which is ubiquitous in the region. This has been done in the past, but without the proper scale and attention to sanitary regulations necessary for sustainability
