Model Desert Camp in Wadi Rum
Model Desert Camp in Wadi Rum
In Wadi Rum area, known for its unique natural, aesthetic and demographic characteristics, the GEF SGP will be supporting a cluster of projects aiming at building the capacities of local CBOs, supporting models for alternative livelihood strategies, introducing new technologies that would contribute to the conservation of the special ecosystem of the area, and enhancing the impacts of previous GEF SGP supported interventions there. Developing these projects was achieved through a strategic partnership with the USAID-funded SIYAHA Project, currently operating in Wadi Rum, and the IUCN Regional Office/ Amman.
The project aims to enhance marketing and promotion of local tourism and enhance the authenticity of desert tourism in Wadi Rum, this encompasses an enhancement in tourism service provision in a sustainable manner that plays a role in conserving cultural heritage and the environment. The project will:
1.Develop a local model of eco-lodges in Wadi Rum that affectively competes with privately owned lodges.
2.Activate the participation of local communities in promoting and marketing sustainable eco-tourism activities.
3.Technical capacity building for Wadi Rum Tourism Cooperative in the management of model campsites.
4.Develop a marketing and promotion programme to promote activities and services presented by the local community which will, in turn, positively reflect on the income of the locals and meet the needs of the visitors in Wadi Rum.
