Developing Eco-tourism Programmes in Wadi Rum
Developing Eco-tourism Programmes in Wadi Rum
In Wadi Rum area, known for its unique natural, aesthetic and demographic characteristics, the GEF SGP is supporting a cluster of projects aiming at building the capacities of local CBOs, supporting models for alternative livelihood strategies, introducing new technologies that would contribute to the conservation of the special ecosystem of the area, and enhancing the impacts of previous GEF SGP supported interventions there. Developing these projects was achieved through a strategic partnership with the USAID-funded SIYAHA Project, currently operating in Wadi Rum, and the IUCN Regional Office/ Amman.
The project aims to improve the level of service provision to campsite visitors in Wadi Rum in order to enhance their experience and contribute to the conservation of the national heritage and the environment.

The project will specifically seek to achieve the following:
1.Promote alternative energy resources that are environmentally sound within local campsites.
2.Develop the basic services provided to visitors to campsites.
3.Develop the capacity of those managing the local campsites.
4.Develop a marketing and promotional programme for the campsites and other tourism services.
