Project Characteristics and Results
Linkages gef projects
Currently, the ministry of Natural Resources is preparing a large scale project, partly funded by GEF regarding renewable energy in the interior of Suriname. It is not sure when implementation of this project will actually take place.
Replication of project activities
There is huge potential for replication, but the sustainability of solar systems remains the challenge, as the community members lack the technical skills, as well as the financial resources to replace solar panels or the batteries.
The potential is there, because communities living in the interior lack electricity, they are currently dependent upon diesel generators. This not only creates emissions of CO2, but also is very unreliable, because there seems to be always a problem with the supply of diesel from the capital towards these communities.
